4K resolution is the headline, but it is not really why this camera is worth owning. The reason is what happens in the two seconds after someone walks onto your property.

The Dahua IPC-HDW3867EM-S-IL-ANZ runs Smart Dual Light — infrared and warm white LEDs in a single multi-core illuminator, each reaching 30 m. Through ordinary night hours the camera sits quietly on infrared, dark and unobtrusive. The moment SMD 4.0 confirms an actual person or vehicle, the warm light triggers and the footage switches to full colour. Jacket colour, vehicle colour, faces — the descriptors every incident report asks for first, captured at exactly the moment they matter, without a floodlight burning above the driveway all night.

Buyer Decision Tips

Buyer Tip — Read the DORI table below before you decide where to mount. This is the most important thing on the page. Dahua publishes a detection range of 84.8 m on the 2.8 mm lens, and it is easy to read that as "this camera sees 85 metres." It does not, in the sense most people mean. Detect means registering that an object is present. Identify — enough detail to recognise a stranger or read a plate — is 8.5 m on the same lens. Both numbers are true and they describe completely different outcomes. Plan your mounting around the Identify figure for anything that needs to stand up as evidence.
Buyer Tip — 8MP is not automatically better than 6MP, and here is the trade-off. This camera and its 6MP sibling both use a 1/2.7″ sensor. Fitting 8 million pixels onto that sensor rather than 6 million means each individual pixel is smaller, and smaller pixels gather less light. The published figures reflect it: this 8MP model is rated at 0.007 lux in colour, while the 6MP version manages 0.005 lux. Choose 8MP when daylight detail and crop headroom matter most. Choose 6MP when the site is poorly lit and low-light performance matters more than pixel count. Neither is universally better and we will tell you honestly which suits your site.
Buyer Tip — Budget the storage before you commit to 4K. Four 8MP cameras generate substantially more data than four 4MP cameras, and that lands squarely on your hard drive. AI coding and H.265+ offset a great deal of it but not all. If you need a specific retention period — 30 days is a common insurance requirement — size the drive for 8MP rather than assuming figures you saw for a 1080p system apply. Tell us camera count, resolution and frame rate and we will do the maths with you.
Buyer Tip — Check your recorder handles 8MP per channel. An NVR rated for 4MP or 6MP per channel will either refuse the stream or quietly downscale it, which discards the entire reason you bought a 4K camera. Confirm both maximum resolution per channel and total decoding capacity. Also worth knowing: many recorders record every channel at full resolution but display a multi-camera split-screen at 1080p — that affects live view only, not your recorded evidence.
Buyer Tip — AcuPick needs a compatible Dahua NVR to be worth anything. The camera generates the metadata regardless of what it is connected to, but the search interface that makes AcuPick useful lives in the recorder. On a third-party NVR over ONVIF you will record perfectly good video and get none of the search capability. If fast incident retrieval is part of why you are buying this camera, confirm your recorder first rather than paying for a feature you cannot reach.
Buyer Tip — Choose the lens at order time, and think in shapes. The 2.8 mm gives 110° horizontally and suits wide, shallow areas viewed from close range — courtyards, carports, general perimeter, indoor spaces. The 3.6 mm narrows to 86°, concentrating the same 8MP across less area, which is what you want for a long driveway, a gate or a defined approach. The 3.6 mm also extends every DORI figure meaningfully, including identification from 8.5 m to 9.9 m. This is a fixed lens — the choice cannot be changed after installation.
Buyer Tip — Remember the warm light is visible. Unlike infrared, people can see it, and it will fire whenever a person or vehicle is detected. Above a driveway that is a deterrent and an asset. Aimed across a boundary into a neighbour's bedroom window, it becomes a conversation you would rather not have — and it is the kind of thing raised months later rather than immediately. Decide the mounting angle with the light in mind, not just the camera view.
Buyer Tip — Draw detection zones tightly, then walk them. The single biggest cause of "the AI doesn't work" complaints is a detection zone drawn across the whole frame, including the road, the footpath and next door's driveway. Draw the zone around the area you actually care about, set the target type to human or vehicle, and test it by walking the boundary. Ten minutes at commissioning saves months of irrelevant alerts.
Buyer Tip — Seal the cable join and use a high-endurance card. IP67 protects the camera body, not a splice made in an unsealed junction box behind it — use a weatherproof enclosure and dress the cable so water drains away from the entry point. Separately, if you are using the 512 GB slot, fit a surveillance-rated or high-endurance card. Standard consumer cards are not built for continuous 24/7 writing and typically fail within months, usually silently and usually discovered on the day you need the footage.

At eave height facing the driveway, the camera sits quietly on infrared all evening and lights up in colour only when someone actually arrives — capturing vehicle colour, clothing and faces while acting as a deterrent in the same moment. Mount so visitors pass within 8–10 m for identification-grade detail.

Gates, Side Access and Rear Boundaries

The quiet points around a property are where people actually get in, and they are usually the least covered. A tripwire across a gate line with human classification produces clean, targeted after-hours alerts rather than reporting every cat and every gust of wind through the hedge.

Shopfronts and Small Commercial

Entry points are the hardest lighting problem in retail — bright outside, dim inside, subject in between. 120 dB WDR and AI SSA keep faces visible rather than reducing them to silhouettes, while 4K resolution gives enough detail to review a counter incident with confidence rather than guesswork.

  • The site is genuinely dark and low-light performance matters more than pixel count. The 6MP version of this camera has a better low-light rating on the same sensor.
  • You want active deterrence. This has a microphone only — no speaker, no strobe, no siren. A TiOC model adds light and audio warning on detection.
  • You want unbroken colour all night regardless of activity. This is dual light — colour on detection. WizColor runs colour continuously.
  • You need to adjust framing after mounting. Fixed lens — a motorised varifocal gives on-site flexibility and remote zoom.

FAQs

How far away can this camera identify someone?

Around 8.5 m on the 2.8 mm lens, or 9.9 m on the 3.6 mm. Those are Dahua's published Identify figures under the DORI standard, and Identify is the band that covers recognising a stranger or reading a plate. The much larger 84.8 m figure you will see quoted is the Detect range, which only means registering that something is present. Both numbers are accurate; they describe different things. Mount for the job you actually need — see the DORI table above.

Is 8MP better than 6MP?

For daylight detail and crop headroom, yes. For low light, not necessarily. Both this and the 6MP version use a 1/2.7″ sensor, so fitting 8 million pixels onto it means each pixel is smaller and gathers less light. The published minimum illumination reflects that: 0.007 lux here against 0.005 lux on the 6MP. If your site is reasonably lit or you are relying on the illuminators, choose 8MP. If it is genuinely dark, the 6MP may serve you better.

How does Smart Dual Light work?

In normal low-light conditions the camera runs infrared only, recording in monochrome and emitting no visible light. When SMD 4.0 confirms a human or vehicle, the warm white LEDs switch on and the footage becomes full colour for the duration of that event, then reverts to infrared. Both illuminators reach 30 m. The effect is colour evidence at the moments that have evidentiary value, without running a white light all night.

Does it record in colour all night?

Only during detection events. Between them it sits on infrared and records greyscale. For most residential and small business use that is the better arrangement — you get the colour evidence without a floodlight above the driveway from dusk to dawn. If you need a continuous colour record regardless of activity, that is a WizColor camera and we can point you to one.

Does it have a speaker or siren?

No. There is a built-in microphone for audio recording, but no speaker, no strobe and no siren — so no two-way talk and no active deterrence. If you want the camera to warn people off rather than simply record them, look at the Dahua TiOC range, which adds red and blue strobe, a siren and two-way audio to the same AI detection.

What is SMD 4.0 and how does it cut false alarms?

Ordinary motion detection compares one frame against the next and triggers on any change — a branch, a shadow, a moth near the lens, headlights sweeping a fence. SMD 4.0 runs a deep learning model that recognises the shape and movement signature of humans and vehicles specifically, and discards the rest before an alert is generated. On this camera it also controls when the warm light fires, so accuracy matters twice over.

What is AcuPick and do I need a particular NVR?

AcuPick tags recorded targets with appearance metadata so footage can be searched by what someone or something looked like, rather than by scrubbing through time. The tagging happens at the camera, but the search interface lives in the recorder and requires a compatible Dahua NVR. On any other recorder the camera records normally and you simply do not get the search. Confirm your NVR before ordering if AcuPick is part of why you are choosing this model.

Start from the shape of the area rather than its size. The 2.8 mm gives 110° horizontally and suits wide, shallow spaces viewed from close range — courtyards, carports, general perimeter, indoor rooms. The 3.6 mm gives 86° and concentrates the same 8MP across a narrower field, which suits a long driveway, gate or defined approach. The 3.6 mm also extends every DORI figure, including identification from 8.5 m to 9.9 m. The lens is fixed, so this is decided at order time.

How much storage will four of these use?

Considerably more than a 1080p or 4MP system — that is the practical cost of 4K. AI coding and H.265+ offset much of it by lowering bitrate during static periods, but not all. If you have a retention target in mind, tell us the camera count, resolution and frame rate and we will size the drive properly rather than guessing.

Can I use it without an NVR?

Yes — a microSD card up to 512 GB supports continuous or event-triggered recording on the camera itself, viewable through the DMSS app, and FTP, SFTP and NAS storage are also supported. That makes it genuinely viable as a standalone unit. Use a surveillance-rated or high-endurance card; standard consumer cards are not designed for continuous writing and typically fail within months.

What power does it need?

Standard 802.3af PoE over a single Cat5e or Cat6 run, drawing 5.3 W typically and 9.5 W maximum with everything active. That low consumption makes it easy to fit several onto a shared switch. 12 V DC is available as an alternative. Use solid copper cable rather than copper-clad aluminium on longer runs — CCA is a common cause of intermittent PoE dropouts.

Is it legal to record audio in Australia?

Surveillance device laws are set at state and territory level and they differ meaningfully. As a general principle, recording private conversations without any party's knowledge is restricted. Entrances, external perimeters, yards and commercial premises with clear signage are usually the appropriate places to enable audio. Check the legislation applying in your state — in Victoria this is the Surveillance Devices Act 1999 — before switching the microphone on, and seek legal advice where the site is a workplace, shared or publicly accessible.

Will it cope with harsh Australian conditions?

Yes. IP67 means fully dust-tight and sealed against water immersion, and the metal housing is rated from −40°C to +60°C at up to 95% humidity — covering rooftop heat, tropical humidity, coastal salt air and inland dust. The rating applies to the camera body, so seal the cable entry and use a weatherproof junction box for any termination, because that join rather than the housing is where outdoor failures almost always begin.
