What is the difference between your two Hikvision bullets?

They solve different problems. This model (DS-2CD2066G2-IU/SL) is the deterrence camera — strobe, audible warning and two-way audio, with standard infrared range. The DS-2CD2T66G2-4I is the long-range model, with extended infrared for deep driveways and boundaries, but no audio and no deterrence features at all. If you want the camera to warn people off, choose this one. If you need to see further at night, choose that one. Both share the same 6MP imaging platform.

Does active deterrence actually work?

For opportunistic intrusion, generally yes — opportunists depend on being unobserved and unhurried, and a strobe with an audible warning removes both conditions immediately. It is less relevant against someone who has specifically targeted a property and expects a response. Treat it as a strong first layer that resolves most casual incidents on its own, not as a substitute for locks, lighting and an alarm system. The 6MP resolution is your fallback for the times it does not work.

Can I really talk to someone through it?

Yes. The built-in microphone and speaker support live two-way audio through the mobile app from anywhere with a connection. In practice a live voice is considerably more effective than an automated warning — being addressed directly, calmly and specifically makes clear a real person is watching in real time, and that ends most situations within seconds. Set up your notifications so you can actually respond quickly, or the feature goes unused.

Will the strobe and warning go off constantly?

Not if it is configured properly. The response triggers on AcuSense classification, so it reacts to people and vehicles rather than animals, foliage or shadows, and detection zones narrow it further to specific areas. The usual cause of nuisance triggering is a zone drawn too wide, taking in a road or footpath. Draw it tightly around what you actually need protected, and walk the boundary after dark to test it.

What does AcuSense do?

It uses deep learning to classify targets as human or vehicle on the camera itself, before anything triggers. Foliage, rain, shadows, pets and wildlife are filtered out. Do bullet cameras really get spider webs?

Yes, and it is the most common complaint about them in Australia. Are there legal considerations with the audio or the warning?

Two worth checking. Audio recording is governed by state and territory surveillance device legislation restricting the recording of private conversations — in Victoria the Surveillance Devices Act 1999. A speaker adds a further dimension in shared or public-facing spaces, so signage matters and legal advice is sensible for a workplace or publicly accessible site. Separately, an audible warning near residential neighbours may fall under local council noise provisions, so check your council's requirements before installing.

What does DarkFighter do?

It is Hikvision's low-light imaging technology, combining sensor design and image processing to produce usable colour at very low light levels. The camera stays in colour mode for longer as light fades, rather than switching to greyscale infrared. Will it work on a non-Hikvision NVR?
