Smart Hybrid

ColorVu Optics at 0.0005 Lux

ColorVu pairs a wide-aperture lens with a highly sensitive sensor to produce colour images in light levels where conventional cameras have long since given up. A rating of 0.0005 lux is exceptionally low — the camera is gathering usable colour information from ambient light alone in conditions the human eye reads as near darkness, before either illuminator is called on.

1/1.8″ Large-Format Sensor

The specification behind the low-light figures, and the one most buyers overlook. A 1/1.8″ sensor has substantially more surface area than the 1/2.7″ format used across most of this category, so each pixel gathers more light. Less digital gain is needed, which means clean images rather than the smeared noise that ruins ordinary night footage.

130 dB True WDR

Higher than the 120 dB found on most cameras in this bracket, and it shows up in exactly one place: the backlit entrance. 6MP Resolution

AcuSense Human and Vehicle Classification

Deep learning classification decides whether motion came from a person, a vehicle, or something you do not care about — before any alert is sent. Animals, foliage, rain and shadows are filtered out. Active Strobe and Audio Alarm

What is Smart Hybrid Light?

It means the camera carries two separate illuminators — infrared and white LED — and lets you choose how they behave. Run infrared only for discreet greyscale monitoring, run continuous white light for genuine 24/7 colour, or run hybrid mode where the camera sits on infrared and fires the white light when AcuSense detects a person or vehicle. Most cameras lock you into one of those behaviours at purchase; this one is a settings change.

What is the difference between ColorVu and AcuSense?

They solve completely different problems and this camera has both. ColorVu is about image quality — wide-aperture optics and a sensitive sensor that produce colour footage in very low light, rather than switching to greyscale infrared. AcuSense is about intelligence — deep learning that classifies motion as human, vehicle or neither, so alerts stay credible and footage becomes searchable. One improves what you see; the other improves what you get told about.

Does it really record in colour all night?

In continuous ColorVu mode, yes — the white light stays on and you get an unbroken colour record. In hybrid mode you get colour during detection events and greyscale infrared between them. In infrared-only mode it records greyscale throughout. Which you choose depends on the position, and you can change it whenever you like.

Can I turn the white light off?

Yes — switch that camera to infrared-only mode and it behaves as a conventional IR camera with no visible light at all. This is the answer if a camera faces a bedroom window, or if a neighbour raises the light after installation. It is worth knowing before you buy, because on a fixed full-colour camera the same situation means replacing the unit.

What does 0.0005 lux actually mean?

Lux measures light level, and the minimum illumination figure tells you how little light a camera needs to still produce a usable image. For reference, full moonlight sits somewhere around 0.1 lux and overcast starlight far below that. A rating of 0.0005 lux is exceptionally low, meaning the camera gathers usable colour information in conditions the eye reads as near total darkness — before either illuminator is called on at all.

Why does the 1/1.8″ sensor matter if it is still 6MP?

Because resolution tells you how many pixels there are, not how much light each one collects. A 1/1.8″ sensor is physically larger than the 1/2.7″ format used in most cameras at this level, so at the same 6MP each pixel is bigger and gathers more light. Less digital gain is needed to brighten the image, which means less noise. In daylight the difference is modest; as light drops it becomes obvious. On a dark site, sensor format is a better guide than megapixel count.

What is 130 dB WDR and do I need it?

Wide dynamic range is the camera's ability to expose bright and dark parts of the same frame correctly. Without it, a person standing in a doorway with bright sky behind them becomes a black silhouette — the single most common way outdoor footage becomes useless. At 130 dB this camera sits above the 120 dB standard across most of the category. If you have any entrance, glass frontage or west-facing door, you need it.

How does AcuSense reduce false alarms?

Ordinary motion detection compares one frame against the next and triggers on any change — a branch, a shadow, a moth near the lens, headlights sweeping a fence. AcuSense runs a deep learning model that recognises the shape and movement signature of humans and vehicles specifically, and discards everything else before an alert is generated. The practical result is that you keep reading your notifications instead of muting them after a fortnight.

Can it trigger my existing alarm system?

Yes — that is what the alarm output is for. It can fire an external siren, strobe or relay when the camera classifies a person or vehicle, letting you put the response wherever it is genuinely useful rather than at the camera. The alarm input works the other way: a beam, door contact or panel output can trigger camera recording, capture and warnings. Worth planning the wiring before installation rather than retrofitting it.

2.8 mm or 4 mm — which lens should I choose?

Start from the shape of the area rather than its size. The 2.8 mm gives roughly 109° horizontally and suits wide, shallow spaces viewed from close range — courtyards, carports, shop entrances, general perimeter. The 4 mm narrows the view and puts the same 6MP across less area, which is what you want for a long driveway, a gate, or a defined approach where detail further out matters. Can it record without an NVR?

Yes — a microSD card up to 512 GB supports continuous or event-triggered recording on the camera itself, which is genuinely useful capacity at 6MP. That makes it viable as a standalone unit on an outbuilding or gate, and as a backup path in a larger system so footage survives if the recorder fails or is stolen. Use a surveillance-rated or high-endurance card; standard consumer cards fail quickly under continuous writing.

Do I need a Hikvision NVR?

Video recording will generally work over ONVIF with third-party recorders. AcuSense classification, searchable analytic events, Smart Hybrid Light event rules, two-way audio and alarm linkage work most reliably on a compatible Hikvision NVR or Hik-Connect platform, and some functions may be limited elsewhere depending on ONVIF support. Is it legal to record audio in Australia?

Surveillance device laws are set at state and territory level and they differ meaningfully. As a general principle, recording private conversations without any party's knowledge is restricted. Entrances, external perimeters, yards and commercial premises with clear signage are usually the appropriate places to enable audio. Check the legislation applying in your state — in Victoria this is the Surveillance Devices Act 1999 — before switching the microphone on, and seek legal advice where the site is a workplace, shared, or publicly accessible.

Will it handle exposed Australian conditions?

Yes. IP67 means fully dust-tight and rated against temporary water immersion, which covers rain, hose spray, humidity, coastal salt exposure and inland dust on permanent external mounting. The rating applies to the camera body only — seal the cable entry and use a weatherproof junction box for any termination, because that join rather than the housing is where outdoor failures almost always begin.
