3200 × 1800 on a large-format progressive scan CMOS. The value of 6MP over 2MP is crop headroom — when you zoom into the corner of a frame during review, there is still real image data rather than a block of pixels. That headroom is what turns footage into evidence.

120 dB True WDR and Image Processing

True 120 dB wide dynamic range, plus BLC, HLC and 3D DNR. WDR saves the backlit doorway shot; HLC suppresses headlight glare that would otherwise wash out the top of a driveway frame every time a car turns in. Together they handle the two lighting problems that ruin most outdoor installations.

ANR Network Dropout Protection

Auto Network Replenishment is the underrated feature here. What is DarkFighter and does it actually make a difference?

DarkFighter is Hikvision's low-light imaging technology, combining sensor design and image processing to produce usable colour at very low light levels — 0.003 Lux on this model. The difference it makes is specific: the camera stays in colour mode for longer as light fades, rather than switching to greyscale infrared. Since colour is the first descriptor anyone asks for after an incident, that extended window is worth real money on a dark site. On a well-lit site the benefit is smaller.

Does it record in colour all night?

No — and this distinction catches people out. DarkFighter dramatically extends how long the camera holds colour, but in genuine darkness it still switches to infrared and records greyscale. If you need continuous colour footage regardless of conditions, that is a ColorVu camera with a permanent white light. This model is the better choice if you want maximum colour retention naturally, plus reliable infrared beyond that, without a light running all night.

What is ANR and why does it matter?

Auto Network Replenishment. If the connection between camera and recorder drops, the camera continues recording to its own memory card. When the link returns, it automatically uploads the missing footage to the NVR, filling the gap so the timeline stays continuous. Without ANR, a network interruption simply becomes a hole in your recorded history — usually discovered at the worst possible moment. It requires a card fitted in the camera and a recorder that supports the feature.

What does AcuSense do?

What is the difference between line crossing and intrusion detection?

Line crossing triggers when a target crosses a virtual line you draw, and can distinguish direction — useful along a fence or across a gate where entering matters but leaving does not. Intrusion triggers when a target enters an area you define and remains in it, which suits zones like a stock compound or a rear yard. Region entrance and exit are variations that fire specifically on crossing into or out of a defined area. Used together they give quite precise control over what counts as an event.

2.8 mm or 4 mm — which lens should I choose?

Start from the shape of the area rather than its size. The 2.8 mm gives roughly 105° horizontally and suits wide, shallow spaces viewed from close range — courtyards, carports, shop entrances, general perimeter coverage. The 4 mm narrows the view and puts the same 6MP across less area, which is what you want on a long driveway, a gate or a defined approach. The lens is fixed, so this is decided at order time. How good is the built-in microphone?

Useful within about five metres, according to Hikvision, and in practice that figure drops further with wind, traffic or general ambient noise. It is designed for entrances, reception areas, courtyards and gates — places where the relevant conversation happens close to the camera. It is not a long-range listening device, so position it with that in mind. There is no speaker, so two-way talkback is not supported.

Will the analytics work on a non-Hikvision NVR?

Video recording will work over ONVIF with most third-party recorders. The analytics — AcuSense classification, line crossing, intrusion, region rules, face capture, and ANR backfill — depend on the recorder understanding Hikvision events, which in practice means a compatible Hikvision NVR. On a third-party platform those alerts may not surface at all. If the analytics are the reason you are buying this camera, pair it accordingly.

Can it record without an NVR?

Yes — it supports microSD, SDHC and SDXC cards for edge recording, plus NAS storage over NFS or SMB/CIFS. Use a surveillance-rated or high-endurance card; standard consumer cards are not built for continuous writing and typically fail within months, usually silently. Paired with a compatible Hikvision card, the camera also supports card encryption and health detection, which gives you warning before a card dies rather than after.

Is it legal to record audio in Australia?

Surveillance device laws are set at state and territory level and they differ meaningfully. As a general principle, recording private conversations without any party's knowledge is restricted. Entrances, external perimeters, yards and commercial premises with clear signage are usually the appropriate places to enable audio. Check the legislation applying in your state — in Victoria this is the Surveillance Devices Act 1999 — before switching the microphone on, and seek legal advice where the site is a workplace, shared, or publicly accessible.

Is IP67 enough for exposed Australian conditions?

Yes. IP67 means fully dust-tight and rated against temporary water immersion, which covers rain, hose spray, humidity, coastal salt exposure and inland dust on permanent external mounting. The rating applies to the camera body only — seal the cable entry and use a weatherproof junction box for any termination, because that join rather than the housing is where outdoor failures almost always start.
