Why Choose the NVR-108MH-D/8P
Most of what makes a small CCTV install go badly happens at the recorder end. A separate PoE switch that turns out to be underpowered. Cameras that need manual IP addressing before they appear. A recorder that costs more than the cameras it is recording.

FAQs
What does 80 Mbps incoming bandwidth actually mean for me?
It is the total data all your cameras can send the recorder at once, shared across every channel. Each camera uses a slice depending on resolution, frame rate and compression — roughly 4–6 Mbps for a 4MP camera on H.265+, and 8–12 Mbps for an 8MP one. Eight 4MP cameras sit comfortably inside 80 Mbps. Eight 8MP cameras at full bitrate will meet or exceed it, and the result is dropped frames rather than a warning. If you are planning full 4K across eight channels, talk to us first.
Does it come with a hard drive?
No. It ships with an empty drive bay, so you will need to add a drive before it can record anything. Use a surveillance-rated drive such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk — standard desktop drives are designed for intermittent use and fail early under continuous surveillance writing, usually silently. We stock surveillance drives and can supply the unit with one fitted.
Why can't it show all eight cameras on screen at once?
Decoding capability is rated at one channel of 8MP or five channels of 1080p, which is separate from how many channels it records. All eight record at full resolution and can each be played back at full resolution — the limit applies only to how many can be decoded for simultaneous display. For most people that is a non-issue, but if a permanent eight-way monitor wall is what you need, choose a higher-spec recorder.
Does it have AI or smart detection?
Not at the recorder. There is no SMD, perimeter protection or face detection built into this NVR. That is not a problem if your cameras are AcuSense models — they classify humans and vehicles onboard and the recorder receives those events normally, so you get intelligent alerts without paying for the capability twice. It only matters if your cameras have no intelligence and you were relying on the recorder to supply it, in which case a different model is the right choice.
Do I need a separate PoE switch?
No, and that is the main reason to choose this model. Eight PoE ports are built in, so cameras plug directly into the recorder using one Cat5e or Cat6 cable each for both data and power. That saves the cost of a switch, the space it would occupy, and the configuration step. HiLook cameras connected to those ports are detected automatically without manual IP addressing.
How long will footage be kept before it overwrites?
It depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate and how much movement the cameras see. Eight cameras fill a drive considerably faster than four, and 8MP fills it faster than 4MP. H.265+ helps significantly. If you need a specific retention period — 30 days is a common insurance or compliance requirement — tell us the camera spec and we will size the drive properly rather than guessing.
Will it work with Hikvision cameras?
Yes. HiLook is Hikvision's sub-brand and the recorder supports Hikvision IP cameras alongside HiLook models. Plug-and-play automatic detection applies to HiLook cameras on the onboard PoE ports. If you are mixing brands or bringing existing cameras across, send us the models and we will confirm what will work before you order.
Should I get 8 channels or 4?
Count the positions you want covered, then add one. Most houses arrive at front door, driveway, back door and side gate — which is four, with nothing spare for the shed, garage or a second storey later. The cost difference between four and eight channels now is far smaller than the cost of replacing the recorder in a year. If there is any chance of expanding, go to eight.
How do I keep my cameras inside the bandwidth budget?
Three things. Set every camera to H.265+ rather than H.264, which roughly halves the data for the same picture. Consider whether every channel needs maximum bitrate — a camera watching a static fence does not need the same allocation as one covering a busy driveway. And if you are running 8MP cameras, check whether you actually need 8MP on every position or whether some would be fine at 4MP. Ten minutes tuning at commissioning is well spent.
Can I view the cameras on my phone?
Yes. Live view and playback are available on iOS and Android through the HiLook mobile app over your internet connection. If your internet connection uses CGNAT you may need to check with your provider, and we can talk you through the setup.
