SMD 4.0 AI Classification

Smart Motion Detection 4.0 uses AI SSA-based analysis to classify what triggered an event as a human, a vehicle, or neither. Animals, wind through foliage, shifting shadows and lighting changes are treated as non-events. This is the difference between a system you keep checking and one you mute in week two.

6MP Imaging at 3072 × 2048

Roughly three times the pixel count of a 2MP camera, at up to 25/30 fps. The value is crop headroom: when you zoom into a corner of the frame during review, there is still image data left rather than a block of pixels. That margin is what turns footage into something worth handing to police.

Starlight Low-Light Performance

A sensitive sensor and wide F1.6 aperture hold colour down to 0.01 Lux, which covers the dusk-and-dawn window and streetlit conditions where cheaper cameras have already flipped to greyscale or dissolved into noise. Colour matters here — it is the first descriptor anyone asks for.

30 m Infrared Night Vision

Integrated IR LEDs cover to 30 m in complete darkness with no supplementary lighting required, which handles the majority of residential driveways, yards and small commercial frontages. Beyond that depth, see the buyer tips below before committing to this model.

Perimeter Protection

Tripwire and intrusion detection let you draw a virtual line across a gate or a zone around a shed, with alerts firing only when a classified person or vehicle crosses it. Combined with SMD, you are filtering by what the object is and where it goes — a far more precise instruction than "tell me when something moves."

True WDR

True wide dynamic range balances exposure across bright and dark zones in the same frame. Outdoors this is the feature that saves the shot of someone standing in a doorway with sky behind them, and stops headlights washing out the top third of a driveway view every time a car turns in.

Built-In Microphone

Records ambient audio alongside video, which regularly supplies the context a fixed camera angle leaves out — a verbal exchange at a counter, a vehicle idling out of frame, an impact you would otherwise have to guess at. Microphone only; there is no speaker, so two-way talkback is not supported.

MicroSD Edge Recording to 256 GB

Records to a card on the camera itself, with no recorder required. That makes it viable as a genuinely standalone unit where running cable to a central NVR is impractical, and as a backup layer in a larger system — footage survives on the card even if the recorder walks out the door with everything else.

IP67 Housing, PoE or 12 V DC

Fully dust-tight and sealed against water ingress for exposed outdoor positions including coastal and high-humidity sites. Standard 802.3af PoE means one Cat6 run carries data and power, with 12 V DC available where PoE is not practical. H.265+ compression keeps the storage cost of 6MP manageable.

Home Driveway and Entry Monitoring

A 110° view from a single eave position covers the full width of a standard driveway plus the front door approach. SMD 4.0 is what makes it liveable on a street-facing property — without classification, every passing car would generate an alert. Mount so that anyone approaching the house passes close to the lens, where the 6MP detail is most useful.

Retail Frontage and Entrances

Shop entries are the hardest lighting problem in retail: bright outside, dim inside, the subject in between. True WDR keeps faces visible instead of reducing them to silhouettes, while tripwire across the threshold gives a clean after-hours trigger and SMD keeps daytime alert volume manageable through trading.

Warehouse and Industrial Perimeters

Loading docks, machinery yards and access gates benefit from geography-based triggers rather than raw motion. An intrusion zone around a stock area or a tripwire across a roller door produces targeted after-hours events, and IP67 construction handles dust and weather on exposed industrial mounting positions.

Shared entries, lobbies and car parks generate disputes as often as incidents, and both need evidence. 6MP detail plus audio capture gives strata managers something concrete to work from, while Starlight performance suits the permanently dim lighting of undercover parking and stairwells.

• You want wide single-camera coverage of a driveway, frontage or yard rather than a narrow focused view.

• You want audio recorded alongside video without adding a separate device.
• You are building a Dahua PoE system with AI events managed centrally at the recorder.

Choose a different model if…

• Your site is deeper than 30 m at night — a motorised varifocal WizSense model gives longer IR reach with the same SMD filtering.
• You want to adjust the field of view after mounting. This is a fixed lens; a motorised varifocal lets you frame on site.
• You want colour footage through the night. This is an infrared camera — a WizColor or dual-light model retains colour after dark.
• You want an active deterrent. There is no strobe or speaker here; a TiOC model adds light and audio warning on detection.
• You need two-way voice communication. Microphone only, no speaker.
• You need readable plates on moving vehicles at distance. That is a dedicated ANPR job — see the DORI note in the buyer tips.

What is SMD 4.0 and how does it cut false alarms?

Ordinary motion detection compares one frame to the next and triggers on any change — a branch, a shadow, a moth near the lens, a headlight sweep. SMD 4.0 uses AI SSA-based classification to recognise the shape and movement signature of humans and vehicles specifically, and discards everything else before an alert is generated. The practical result is that your notifications stay credible enough that you keep reading them.

How far can this camera actually see?

It depends what you mean by "see." Under the DORI standard Dahua publishes Detect at 86 m and Recognise at 34 m. Detect means registering that an object is present; Recognise means you could tell it was someone familiar. Identifying a stranger or reading a plate is a shorter distance again. At night, infrared caps usable coverage at 30 m regardless. Mount for the job you actually need rather than the largest number on the spec sheet — we are happy to advise on placement.

What field of view does the 2.8 mm lens give?

Approximately 110° horizontally, which is genuinely wide — enough to cover a full driveway, a shopfront, or a room from a corner, from one mounting point. The trade-off is that a wide scene spreads the available resolution thinly, so subjects further out appear small. For longer-range or narrow-angle work, a longer fixed lens or a varifocal model concentrates the same 6MP on less area.

Does it record in colour at night?

Not once it is genuinely dark. Starlight technology holds colour to 0.01 Lux, which covers dusk, dawn and streetlit conditions well past the point where a standard camera would have switched over. But below that the camera moves to infrared and records in greyscale. If keeping colour through the night matters, look at Dahua's WizColor or dual-light range instead.

Can I use it without an NVR?

Yes. A microSD card up to 256 GB supports continuous or event-triggered recording on the camera, viewable through the Dahua mobile app or web interface, which makes it fully standalone for single-camera sites. Note that tripwire and intrusion zones are typically configured and managed through a compatible Dahua NVR, so a recorder is still recommended if perimeter protection is central to what you need.

Will the AI features work on a non-Dahua NVR?

Video recording will work on most third-party NVRs via ONVIF. SMD 4.0 classification, tripwire, intrusion and push notification integration depend on the recorder understanding WizSense events, which in practice means a compatible Dahua NVR. On a third-party recorder those alerts may not surface at all. If the AI is why you are buying this camera, pair it with a Dahua recorder and confirm the firmware supports WizSense processing.

Does it support two-way audio?

No. There is a built-in microphone that records ambient audio, but no speaker, so you cannot speak through the camera. If you need to talk to someone at the camera position, an intercom or a camera with an integrated speaker is the right product.

Is it legal to record audio in Australia?

Surveillance device laws are set at state and territory level and they differ meaningfully. As a general principle, recording private conversations without any party's knowledge is restricted. Entrances, external perimeters, yards and commercial premises with clear signage are usually the appropriate places to enable audio. Check the legislation applying in your state — in Victoria this is the Surveillance Devices Act 1999 — before switching the microphone on, and seek legal advice where the site is shared or sensitive.

Is IP67 enough for exposed Australian conditions?

Yes. IP67 means fully dust-tight and rated against temporary water immersion, which covers rain, hose spray, humidity and coastal salt exposure on permanent external mounting. The rating applies to the camera body only — seal the cable entry and use a weatherproof junction box for any termination, because that join is where outdoor failures almost always begin rather than the camera itself.
